I did not know what type of plant this was until I did a little research and found a website called  Desert USA . Apparently it's quite poisonous, (the plant, not the website) but there are tiny bites all over the flowers and leaves.

California poppies seem happy growing between rocks

I try to grow California poppies from seed and never have success. But here they are perfectly happy to grow between rocks along the American River between the Sunrise bridge and the walk bridge.They seem to grow only where they want to grow and not where I want them to grow.

Old Fair Oaks Bridge 

The Old Fair Oaks bridge is a walk bridge used by hundreds of people on beautiful spring days to go from the American River Bike trail to old Fair Oaks, and back. I have heard it referred to as the "Red Bridge" by rafters.  But it wasn't always that way. Built in 1909, vehicles used it for many years according to Wikipedia. Now it is strictly a pedestrian and bicycle bridge. I have jogged across this bridge many more times than I can count.
